WCC Centenary Snooker Post #7

Centenary Post Number 7 is the end of season Stats from the D&DB&SL 1988/89 Season kindly provided by the Author, Phil Hall.

This was the first year of the Premier Division & as mentioned in the previous Centenary post, Wallingford A Team were Champions for the inaugural year.

As you can see, Wallingford had four Teams across the 5 Divisions; A & B Teams in the Premier, C Team in the First Division & D Team in the Second - finishing positions & Competition Winners will be shown in a subsequent Centenery Post.

With 12 teams in each division they were halcyon days with 60 teams across the League.

Wallingford also entered a squad in the Oxford League which they did for 4 years. Sadly I do not have any League or Competition results... ...unless anyone else has?

Interest in Snooker was on the crest of a wave having catalysed with the Pot Black BBC TV series which ran from 1969 to 1986.

And also in 1989 in the World Snooker Championship a certain Steve Davis won his 6th & last World Title, his 3rd in succession. He beat John Parrott by a modern day record winning margin of 18-3 during which he made 1 century break, his 4th of the campaign & the highest of the tournament was a 141 by a certain Stephen Hendry.

Again, feel free to message me with any contributions of your own which you may have (photographs, newspaper cuttings, etc.) & I'll add them to the feeds.

Snooker Rep.
