WCC Centenary Snooker Post #7

Centenary Post Number 7 is the end of season Stats from the D&DB&SL 1988/89 Season kindly provided by the Author, Phil Hall.

This was the first year of the Premier Division & as mentioned in the previous Centenary post, Wallingford A Team were Champions for the inaugural year.

As you can see, Wallingford had four Teams across the 5 Divisions; A & B Teams in the Premier, C Team in the First Division & D Team in the Second - finishing positions & Competition Winners will be shown in a subsequent Centenery Post.

With 12 teams in each division they were halcyon days with 60 teams across the League.

Wallingford also entered a squad in the Oxford League which they did for 4 years. Sadly I do not have any League or Competition results... ...unless anyone else has?

Interest in Snooker was on the crest of a wave having catalysed with the Pot Black BBC TV series which ran from 1969 to 1986.

And also in 1989 in the World Snooker Championship a certain Steve Davis won his 6th & last World Title, his 3rd in succession. He beat John Parrott by a modern day record winning margin of 18-3 during which he made 1 century break, his 4th of the campaign & the highest of the tournament was a 141 by a certain Stephen Hendry.

WCC Centenary Snooker Post #6

The 6th post of this series is a cutting from the local Herald newspaper from the end of the 1988-89 Season - the first year that the Premier Division was formed!

As you can see there is a great picture of the inaugural Premier Division Champions, Wallingford A - Phil Hall (in waistcoat, naturally!), Colin Baker, Alan Bell, George Flynn, Bob Seares & Stu Mogford.

That year Oracle A won the First Division, Broadway A the Second, Oracle B the Third and Goring & Streatley Golf Club the Fourth.

Notable High Breaks were from Gerald Francombe (52) in Div 2 & a young Pom Merola (63) in Div 3.  Gerald also won the Singles Title that year & young Stuart Mogford won the Under 23s.

There's even a mention of the Jim Pink Plate Final between AERE Police v Wantage D in which you will note the Wantage team contained an also very young Tim Williamson, now of Captain of Wantage  B - well he does turn 50 this year!

With thanks to the aforementioned Phil Hall for providing the cutting.

Again, feel free to message me with any contributions of your own which you may have (photographs, newspaper cuttings, etc.) & I'll add them to the feeds.

WCC Centenary Snooker Post #5

So, following on with more Black & White nostalgia - don't worry youngsters, there will be colour pictures, Stats & Tables in due course.

Wholly appropriate for our Centenary Year & forthcoming Pro Exhibition, here we remember bygone days of Wallingford Comrades Club hosting regular Professional Snooker Players Exhibitions with a picture of a very young Rex Williams (2nd from left in white shirt & black waistcoat) by Table 1 - please note the 'Old School' Score Board.  Gordon Izzard of Fawley has recently purchased one of these antiques at a princely sum!

Rex Williams was a Professional Snooker Player from 1951-1997 when he did as most retired pros do, became a commentator.  He also won the World Professional Billiards Championship seven times from 1968 to 1983, including a reign as champion from 1968 to 1980.

From L to R, Ron Brewer, Rex Williams, (sorry, I don't know the man standing in front of the post - anyone else know?) & William 'Bill' Billingham.

Again, feel free to message me with any contributions of your own which you may have (photographs, newspaper cuttings, etc.) & I'll add them to the feeds.

D&DB&SL Tables - End of Season 1987/88

For as many years as I can remember a certain 'Legend' of the D&DB&SL, Vic Hartley has been diligently completing & posting (& I mean actual Royal Mail posting back-in-the-day!) our League Tables.

I have kindly been supplied with this scanned copy (thank you Phil Hall) of his hand written League Tables from 1987/88 & just look - 4 divisions of 14 Teams!!!  And if you read the typed print (from a proper old-school type writer!) at the bottom, you'll see that the Annual Presentation was a Dinner & Dance Night.  Oh, those halcyon days.

Enjoy!

Again, feel free to message me with any contributions of your own which you may have (photographs, newspaper cuttings, etc.) & I'll add them to the feeds.
