Match Reports - John Evans & Presidents Cup 1st round - 20/11/13

JOHN EVANS CUP 1st round
(Match report by Club Rep)

Wallingford A v Challow B

Kev 'Cuz' Higgs starts for the A Team in an 'all Spurs fans' clash, playing Ian Izzard (who's dragged away from 'Fatherly duties' as reserve by his Dad, Captain Gordon Izzard).  Cuz, fresh from Oxford league matches (where he has a VERY impressive win ratio!), brings some of that 'magic' to Wallingford!  Although it was a close game until the colours, Cuz seals the win, 55-27 to put the A Team 1-0 up.

Next up was Captain Billy v Paul Finch (who now has his own practice table - the 'old' table from the Wantage Police Station!  Lots of good memories & history there Paul!).  It was a nip & tuck affair with neither player pulling a frame winning advantage.  With pink & black sat either side of a corner pocket, Paul gets first chance & doubles the brown, lands perfect on the blue to slide down behind pink & seal it with the black, 65-41 to level it at 1-1.

Cue a great response from current Novice Champion, Tom Hamilton-Williams v Gordon Izzard.  Poor Gordon was the subject of a bit of a mauling as Tom used all his experience, ability & match play to win, 59-18 to put Wallingford in control & 2-1 up.

Next up was Nigel 'VC' Prior v Ricky 'Ringer' Delahunt (ex-Fawley, who signed up with Challow to stay in the D&DS&BL Comps).  It was a very cagey affair at the start & Nigel played some lovely patient safety to prise an opening.. & when he did... awesome play!  VC sealed the 'Glory Leg' against a tricky opponent, 62-34 to put us in round 2 of the John Evans, 3-1!

Last up (& not by design!) was 'Anchorman', Dave 'Daddy G' Greathead v Baz Alexander.  Now Baz was bang up for this, having faced Dave on a number of occasions (& come off 2nd!).  Baz's Dad, Chris 'Tof' Alexander even popped in to give his boy some moral support - answering the question & prove the 'Blood's thicker than water' theory!  However, it was a non-event for Baz as Dave played some lovely snooker, producing some great 'touch' shots to win (& then some), 68-12 to make the final score, 4-1.

Well done A Team & a worthy response to our last Cup match defeat at Abingdon RBL (who we'll face in the League in a couple of weeks time!).

No match for the B Team in the 1st round as they joked that they were 'seeded through' due to their 'higher than the A Team League position', with a BYE!

PRESIDENTS CUP 1st round
(Match report by Captain KP)
Marlborough C 3 Wallingford C 2
Let me begin by saying its a learning season for the young lads we have on our side & hopefully they will learn from the mistakes & it will make them better players (every day's a School Day!).
Frame one - Joey played Ken Cooper which was a repeat of the league game 2 weeks ago.  Ken always had control of the frame and came out an easy winner 52-18.  One bit of advice l could give Joey is not to hit the balls so hard (& Captain KP knows all about that!) as there is no doubt he can pot a good ball.  0-1.
Frame Two - Kevin played (83 YEARS YOUNG!) Vic Hartley who took a 22 point lead with good match snooker.  Kevin came back to lead on the colours by one point only to see Vic pot the last 4 balls with a 22 break to win, 63-42.  Didn't do much wrong, just have to take your hat off to Vic and say well done.  0-2
Frame Three - Luke was up against Dave Bradshaw to save the match.  Alas it wasn't to be & Dave also went out an easy winner 50-17.  Luke has a lovely touch around the table & l'm sure his day will come.  0-3
Frame Four - It was Hughs turn & his opponent was Terry Harper.  It was a bit scrappy at times but Hugh was always on top winning 45-24 (at last a frame on the board!) and Hugh back to winning ways again.  1-3
Frame Five - The match of the night saw Alan take on the home sides best player, Ade Jackson.  Some good potting from both players and the safety wasn't bad too.  Ade raced into a 27 lead but Alan came back well and took the last 3 balls to win by one point, 51-50!  Just what Alan needed to also get back to winning ways.  2-3 to salvage some pride for the C Team
Next week back to the league where we have two home games on the spin.  Hopefully pick up a win and some much needed points!

Back to League action next week (for some!) as Wallingford A travel to Abingdon Con A for a 3rd v 1st in the Premier clash, whilst the B Team sit out another BYE week... & won't know who to cheer for as they sit sandwiched by both teams, 1 point either side!

C Team have a home fixture v the experienced Kennington.
