WCC Centenary Post #11

Apologies to those that have been avidly following the WCC Centenary Posts, but finally after a little unforeseen delay, here is Post #11, which is the End-of-Season Stats from the 1989-90 Season.

With 3 teams playing from Wallingford Comrades across the 5, yes FIVE divisions, plus a team in the Oxford League, we were healthily represented.

In our House Competitions, Colin Baker & Phil Hall won their first Doubles Title & George Flynn won the Singles.  A certain John Beardsley gets an honourable mention as he won the Darts Singles and Stu Mogford & Nicky Somarakis proved they were also proficient with cards as well as cues as they won the Crib Pairs.

1990 was the year that saw Stephen Hendry become the youngest ever Snooker World Champion at the age of 21 years & 106 days when he beat Jimmy White 18-12 to lift the title for the first time, pocketing £120K.  John Parrott made the highest break of the tournament with a 140.  And this was the first year since 1982 that Steve Davis failed to reach the Final as he was defeated 14-16 by Jimmy in the Semi Final, the first time he had beaten him at The Crucible.

Again, feel free to message me with any contributions of your own which you may have (photographs, newspaper cuttings, etc.) & I'll add them to the feeds.

Snooker Rep.
