D&DS&BL Week 19 Match Reports

Week 19 saw a home league fixture for the A Team v Fairmile & an away fixture for the B Team at Wantage.

Captain Pete opened v Dennis Finnon & after 2 straight defeats Captain does no more than knock in a lovely 50 break (to post the Highest Break by a Comrades player this season, bettering his previous 40!).  In a demolition frame, Dennis conceded with 3 reds left!  A 67-1 win & 1-0 up!

With Nigel 'VC' absent, Kev 'Super Sub' Gray stepped in to the team & was on 2nd v Stuart Foley.  Stu had a 'mare of a start missing some ridiculous easy reds (we've all been there!) & Kev pulled a lead.  Stu came back with a nice 20 break to re-take the lead... & then Kev slotted in a brave/fabulous doubled green & cleared to pink (quality long pot!) to win the 2nd by 55-45! Good scalp considering his lack of 'match sharpness'!  2-0 up!

In the 3rd frame, Tom played Aaron Tame (in a preliminary of the Novices Final!).  Both players were rattling a few pots & it was a bit of a safety battle in a sporadic frame.  Both missed chances on the brown but in the end Aaron nicked it on the pink, 33-52.  2-1... & off for supper (thanks Oz & Lucy!).

Kev 'Cuz' was on 4th v Geoff Fisher (hang on, isn't he a Comrades Member?).  Cuz always looked in control & slotted in some lovely pots.  The frame wasn't without drama though as Geoff missed a crucial black & subsequently laid some wicked snookers which pulled him back from 20+ behind on the colours.  Cuz snicked in the finest of cuts on the yellow, potted green in the middle & laid a horrible snooker on the brown which Geoff failed to escape from... leaving a free ball!  Geoff missed the brown (again) having been put back in & having potted a lovely long brown, subsequently snookered himself on the blue!  He then fouled the pink to leave himself needing snookers to save the frame.  Cuz potted the blue to make it a win 66-34 & 3-1 up!

Dave 'Anchorman' was on in his usual last place & faced his 'old' nemesis Phil Collins!  Dave toughed it out leading all the way & made a nice 25 break in the process!  Predictably, Phil came back at him & was looking to clear brown to black to 'nick it'... but after pinging round 3 cushions over did position on black, tried the cut & missed the pot only to see the cue ball go 'in off' in the middle & hand the frame win to Dave 48-44!  Not the way you want to win, but as Dave (Memory Man) recited afterwards, it's happened to him before, so you'll always take the 'W'!!!

So a useful 4-1 win for the A Team... & texts were pining back from Captain Kev of the B Team as they were promised a pint per point 'nicked' at Wantage!

At Wantage Comrades frame 1 saw Dave Rowe v Phil Hall.  Phil was in good form & raced to a 40 point lead leaving Dave needing snookers.  Now Dave's been playing some really solid match play of recent & promptly got the required snookers... only to lose on the black 51-57!  Good effert 'Champ'!  1-0 down.

Frame 2 saw the rejuvenated Pete Beaumont play Sean Dorian.  Unfortunately despite Pete's recent rediscovered enthusiasm he was out played from start to finish.  Captain Kev reckons he had other things on his mind (Leeds getting promotion to the Premier League?  In his dreams!)  Sean won by 59-20 to put the B Team 2-0 down & a mountain to climb!

In frame 3 Andy Rance faced Matt Todd.  Both players played good match snooker & with the scores at 37 each Matt potted a fantastic red to the middle leading to a 23 break which was to form the frame winning lead as he ran out the winner 65-37 & 3-0 down!

In the 4th Rob House was pitted against Over 50s Finalist Ian Barnes.  Both players had their chances but it was Ian who came out on top (with the rub of the green apparently), winning by 65-39 & making it 4-0 down for the B!

Frame 5 was not a great frame from Captain Kevin who was playing Dougie Nielson.  It was a very scrappy game which could have gone either way, but Dougie won (in the end quite convincingly) by 51-13 making it a full 5 red squares for the B Team & no free pints!

Not a good penultimate league match for the B Team who play their last league match next week (they have their 2 bye weeks over the last 2 weeks of the season!  NOT ideal!) with a home fixture v Challow B.  Now that match could prove to be a bit significant as Challow B are above them in the 1st Division  won't be giving away any points as they strive for the title!  B Team need to get as many points as they can as they then sit  watch other results to see if they can be caught in 1st Division Runners Up spot (let's hope not!).

2 match nights next week, with the afore mentioned B Team at home to Challow in the league on Wednesday as the A Team travel to Fawley (can the A Team do the B Team a favour & keep Fawley off their Runners Up spot by taking a big points haul?  Are their pints on it?).

Then on Thursday is a small matter of the John Evans semi finals which will be fought out between Abingdon Con A, Wantage A & Wallingford A & B Teams!  Don't forget the dress code (NO JEANS!) & teams to be at the neutral venue of Didcot Con BY 7.20pm SHARP for the draws!
