D&DS&BL Week 20 Match Reports

Week 20 of League competition sees the A Team travel all the way over to face Fawley & the B Team at home in a 'top of the table clash' v Challow B.

Captain Pete starts 1st v Neil Winney.  It was a scrappy frame with neither player making a frame winning contribution (which was to be a similar pattern in most frames) & Pete was behind on the colours.  It went down to pink with the black in open play & as he got down for his shot... someone's mobile buzzed!  Pete subsequently missed the pot on the pink (should've got up!), which Neil took but he missed the cut on the black.  Pete knocked in a long black to the yellow bag to tie the scores for a re spot!  Winning the coin toss Pete put Neil in & he left a long black to the green bag.  Pete rattled it to see it come down over the corner bag for an easy pot for Neil for frame, 41-48 & 1-0 down.

2nd frame saw Kev 'Super Sub' Gray face Pete Lambourne.  Kev had stepped in at the last minute to sub for a poorly Tom & he had a really tight frame.  Kev laid several nice snookers to edge a lead, but onto the colours & Pete would pot a colour only to snooker himself on the next!  Neither player could pull a convincing lead but Kev potted an impressive brown, but the 'cocked hat' blue was brilliant to leave Pete needing a snooker which he never got!  A good levelling win for Kev by 67-43 & 1-1 in frames!

Jon 'Hawkinator' was on 3rd v Neil Murphy & Jon had a right tussle!  It took a good half an hour of safety match play for Jon to prise an opening to make a nice 3 blacks 24 break to pull a frame winning lead.  Even then Jon remained in full match play mode & laid some lovely snookers to enforce his lead, eventually running out with a huge winning margin of 90-25!  You certainly wouldn't have predicted that score line when 6 reds were clustered round the balck on the rail at the start!  2-1 up!

Frame 4 saw Ricky Delahunt face Kev 'Cuz'.  After a wide open split of the pack of reds, Ricky made a 17 (including a fluked black!), but Cuz played some good baulk line safety to stick with 'the plan'.  Ricky missed a straight blue to the middle & from there it was a very scrappy mid frame with 4 reds all safe.  Cuz had some awful running go against him... but sometimes these things level out through a frame!  Ricky fluked some outrageous snookers & spent the majority of the frame holding up an apologetic hand!  Cuz toughed it out & despite all the bad run against him, fluked the crucial blue, sank a good medium-long pink for a frame winning black which was hanging over the pocket!  A 55-46 win & the match win sealed at 3-1 up!

Dave 'Anchorman' was on last v a familiar opponent, Nigel 'Billiards' Winney.  Dave started off with a nice 20 break but Nigel clawed it back before Dave slotted in another lovely 20 break to pull a lead going into the colours.  Nigel steadily took lower value colours in single visits before doubling the brown, potting the blue but (egged on by his team mates) missed a double on the pink but potted it 2 shots later.  Dave had an awful 'kick' on the final black with the rest trying to drop it in down the rail, but left it suitably difficult for Nigel who missed the (very) fine cut & left the black for Dave to drop in with the rest!  59-51 win & a match result of 4-1!

A good 4 away points gained & for the 3rd match out of 4, Captain loses the first only to see the troops rally & take the next 4!  Well done lads!

No league has been posted at time of writing so I don't know the points gap to Wantage who were due to play away to Abingdon Con A!  It was 2 points!

Meanwhile, back at Wallingford Comrades, the B Team were facing Challow B in a 2nd v 1st in Division 1!

Frame 1 saw Captain Kev playing young Adam Bruce.  Quote from Kev 'Boy can't he play!  From ball one he putted me off the table... from safe areas (Oh Kev... I KNOW!  LOL!)!  You've just got to admire the way he plays... a star of the future'.  As you could probably guess, Kev came 2nd with a frame score of 17-69 & 0-1 down.

2nd frame saw Dave Glaves come in as sub for Dave Rowe.  Dave played very solid throughout against Barry Alexander & made a classy 25 clearance to win 60-39 & level the match at 1-1.

Frame 3 saw Pete Beaumont face Paul Finch.  It was nip and tuck most of the way & with the last 3 balls left, Pete went in off the blue!  Paul potted blue & pink to win 50-58 & make the frame score 1-2.

In the 4th frame Rob House played Ian Izzard.  Rob outclassed his younger opponent throughout.  No big breaks but steady scoring with Rob coming out the winner convincingly by 44-7 to level the match at 2-2!

And so to a deciding 5th frame!  Step up to the plate Andy Rance!  He faced 'Grandad' Gordon Izzard.  Andy was always in control & never looked like losing.  As the frame score saw Andy scoring steadily with a frame win by 60-20 for an all important 3-2 match win.

So that was the B Teams last League fixture as they have 2 byes for the last 2 weeks of the League... when they must sit & wait for the Fawley results to see if their 6 point cushion in Runner Up spot is enough!  Cross fingers that they can record a 2nd consecutive year as Runners Up in Division 1!

There will be an additional match blog tomorrow night as both A & B Teams contest the John Evans Cup Semi Finals over at Didcot Con Club!  DON'T FORGET THE DRESS CODE!  NO JEANS & BE THERE FOR THE DRAW FOR OPPONENTS AT 7.20 SHARP!
